Is Your Business Email Really Protected?
If I asked most business owners whether their email is secure, they’d probably answer, “I think so.”
The truth is, that’s becoming a harder question to answer.
More of the cyberattacks we’re seeing today don’t involve someone “hacking” a computer. Instead, they involve criminals tricking someone into giving up their Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace password. Once they’re in, they can read emails, send fake invoices, change payment instructions, or impersonate someone in your company.
The encouraging news is that many of these attacks can be prevented by taking a few simple steps before they happen.
What This Means for Your Business
This week, I’d encourage every business owner to take five minutes and ask these questions:
- Is Multi-Factor Authentication enabled for every employee?
- Have we removed accounts for former employees?
- Are our administrator accounts protected with extra security?
- Do we know who to call if someone clicks on a suspicious email?
If you’re unsure about any of those answers, it’s worth taking a closer look before it becomes a problem.
Our Advice
At New Creature Computers, we’ve found that the businesses with the fewest technology problems aren’t necessarily the ones spending the most money.
They’re the ones that consistently take care of the basics.
Keeping computers updated, protecting email accounts, maintaining reliable backups, and reviewing security settings on a regular basis can prevent many of the issues that lead to expensive downtime.
Technology doesn’t have to be complicated—but it does need regular attention.
Why This Matters Now
Microsoft continues expanding security features and AI capabilities across Microsoft 365, while cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated in how they target business email accounts.
The biggest takeaway isn’t that you need to buy new software. It’s that now is a good time to make sure you’re taking full advantage of the security features you already have. Many businesses are paying for protections they haven’t enabled yet.
